VIENTIANE, June 26 (Xinhua) -- Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone has reaffirmed the government's commitment to combating narcotic drugs and strengthening nationwide efforts against drug-related challenges.
In a message marking the 39th International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on Friday, Sonexay said that the government continues to prioritize comprehensive measures, including public awareness campaigns, stronger law enforcement, alternative livelihood programs, rehabilitation and treatment services, and greater involvement from communities and civil society.
He also highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen legal frameworks, dismantle drug trafficking networks, seize illegal narcotics and assets, and prosecute offenders in accordance with the law.
Sonexay called on all sectors of society to work together to prevent drug abuse and reduce the impact of illicit narcotics.
He stressed that sustained cooperation and shared responsibility are essential to protecting public health, maintaining social stability, and advancing the goal of building a safer, drug-free Lao society.
The Lao Ministry of Public Security reported 3,660 drug trafficking cases in 2025, resulting in the arrest of 5,643 suspects, including 322 foreign nationals. ■
