SUVA, June 22 (Xinhua) -- In Fiji, progress is being made on efforts to postpone the age of children using social media to 16.

The country's Social Media Age Deferment Taskforce held its second meeting in Suva on Monday, during which discussions focused on finalizing the Taskforce's Terms of Reference and progressing plans to present the proposed legislation to Parliament later this year.

While addressing the meeting, Minister for Information, Environment and Climate Change Lynda Tabuya noted that Fiji continues to closely monitor developments in countries that have already introduced or are pursuing similar restrictions on social media access for children.

She stressed that any restrictions introduced in Fiji must be tailored to the country's unique cultural and social context.

The minister emphasized that a whole-of-society approach would be critical to ensuring the success of the proposed legislation, with government agencies, parents, educators, communities, and industry stakeholders all playing a role in protecting children online.

Online Safety Commission and Fiji Law Reform Commission will work alongside the Fijian government to deliver a bill to Parliament later this year that would introduce a minimum social media access age of 16, Tabuya said.
