KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's state-owned oil and gas firm Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) has secured access to natural gas fields in Turkmenistan through an agreement that ensures energy security, leaders of Malaysia and Turkmenistan said on Saturday.
The agreements signed with Turkmenistan will enable Malaysia, through Petronas, to participate in developing major gas fields in a nation possessing some of the world's largest gas reserves, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov said in a joint statement.
"Recognizing a shared vision, the leaders emphasized the significance of deepening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector and acknowledged Petronas' longstanding and positive contributions in this field," it said.
"Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening a robust and enduring partnership, with a strong focus on the oil and gas sector aimed at sustained growth and mutual prosperity," it said, adding that the two countries will also cooperate in a number of other fields, including education and scientific exchanges, as well as agreeing to close cooperation in various regional and international organizations.
The agreements stemmed from Anwar's two-day official visit to Turkmenistan, which began on Thursday, at the invitation of Berdimuhamedov and reciprocated Berdimuhamedov's official visit to Malaysia in December 2024. ■
