NEW DELHI, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday welcomed the peace deal reached between Iran and the United States on ending the conflict in the Middle East.

"I welcome the understanding reached between the United States and Iran on ending the conflict in West Asia (Middle East), which has caused serious economic disruption across the world and led to loss of life in many countries," Modi wrote on a social media platform.

"India hopes that the implementation of this understanding will help restore peace and stability in the region and ensure the freedom of navigation and commerce," Modi said.

Iran and the United States reached an initial agreement early on Monday to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and extend the ceasefire.

Modi further stated that India looks forward to deliberations on the remaining issues and to reaching a sustainable final agreement.
