Sri Lanka launches construction of Central Expressway section

COLOMBO, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka officially launches the construction of the Rambukkana-Galagedara section of the Central Expressway on Friday under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, according to the Road Development Authority (RDA).

According to RDA Director-General Anuradha Hettiarachchi, the section, which is under the second phase of the third segment of the Central Expressway project, runs for 18.7 kilometers.

Currently, the first phase of the project, from Pothuhera to Rambukkana, is under construction and is expected to be completed by mid 2027. The government has allocated 78 billion Sri Lankan rupees (237.6 million U.S. dollars), for the first phase, while the Rambukkana-Galagedara is estimated to cost 112.4 billion rupees.

The government earlier said all funds have been secured from domestic sources and that local contractors will carry out the construction work.
