VIENTIANE, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Laos continues to strengthen efforts to address unexploded ordnance (UXO) contamination and expand international cooperation, as it continues to threaten lives and hinder socio-economic development.

The Lao government, in cooperation with its partners, hosted a regional seminar for the Asia-Pacific region on the implementation of the Convention on Cluster Munitions in Vientiane from Wednesday to Friday.

The seminar brought together policymakers, legal experts, and UXO clearance specialists from across the region to strengthen regional cooperation and share technical expertise on mine action, victim assistance, and risk education.

Speaking at the event, Lao Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Anouparb Vongnorkeo stressed the importance of turning international commitments into practical national action while promoting stronger regional cooperation.

Delegates also discussed the role of UXO clearance in supporting sustainable development, particularly Laos' SDG 18, which aims to ensure lives free from UXO threats. Participants emphasized the need for continued international support.

The Lao government has reaffirmed that UXO clearance remains a national priority, underscoring its commitment to public safety and socio-economic development. It also highlighted the role of youth and international partnerships in addressing UXO contamination.

More than 2 million tons of ordnance, including around 270 million cluster submunitions, were dropped on Laos between 1964 and 1973, making it the most heavily bombed country per capita in the world.

Despite decades of clearance work, UXO-related accidents continue to occur. In 2025, 15 accidents resulted in 25 victims, including six fatalities.
