JAKARTA, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia is pressing ahead with the development of its giant sea wall project along the northern coast of Java, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono said on Friday.
Spanning 575 kilometers and divided into 15 segments, the project is designed to protect the Pantura region from land subsidence and rising sea levels, while supporting industrial activities, food security and the livelihoods of millions of people living in coastal areas.
"The government is continuing to monitor the project in 2026, and we expect implementation to progress further by 2027," Agus said.
He noted that coordination among regions and the formulation of a more detailed implementation roadmap are being strengthened to accelerate project execution.
Designated as one of the national strategic priorities under President Prabowo Subianto's administration, the giant sea wall project is also expected to support ecosystem preservation and protect fisheries in addition to urban and industrial development.
Planning and groundbreaking preparations are currently being coordinated with provincial and municipal governments. ■
