NEW DELHI, May 19 (Xinhua) -- At least 13 people were killed and 25 others injured on Monday after a speeding container trailer crashed into a mini truck carrying a marriage party in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, police said Tuesday.
The accident took place in the Dhanivari area of Palghar district, about 135 km north of Mumbai, the capital city of Maharashtra.
According to police, the impact of the collision was so severe that both vehicles overturned and suffered extensive damage.
Police have registered a case and ordered an investigation into the accident.
India's state-run broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) said preliminary investigations suggest the mini truck was carrying passengers way beyond its capacity.
"Excessive speed, a narrow stretch of the road, and the mini truck driver losing control of the vehicle are suspected to be the primary causes behind the crash," the broadcaster said.
Deadly road accidents are common in India, often caused by overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving. ■
