JAKARTA, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia plans to build a new oil storage facility within a special economic zone in Sumatra to strengthen its energy reserves, the country's Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia has said.

The minister told reporters on Monday that a feasibility study for the project is currently underway.

"We plan to build this in Sumatra and will establish a special economic zone specifically for it," he said.

Beyond domestic interests, the minister proposed that Indonesia serve as a regional hub for a planned ASEAN oil storage network, aligning with the ASEAN Petroleum Security Agreement.

The hub's final location remains undecided, he noted.

The minister said the Sumatra facility will proceed regardless of the regional plan.
