COLOMBO/HANOI, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka and Vietnam signed five memorandums of understanding (MoUs) on Friday to strengthen cooperation in several sectors, Sri Lanka's President's Media Division (PMD) said in a statement.

The MoUs were signed at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo in the presence of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and visiting Vietnamese President To Lam, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee, the statement said.

The MoUs span police training, scientific research, cultural exchanges, and cooperation in information and communications.

Vietnam and Sri Lanka upgraded their bilateral relations to a comprehensive partnership on Friday, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

Speaking at a press briefing on the outcomes of their talks, the two leaders said both sides had pledged to take breakthrough measures to soon raise bilateral trade turnover to 1 billion U.S. dollars.

They also agreed to work toward a future bilateral agreement on trade and investment, the report added.
