COLOMBO, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Former SriLankan Airlines Chief Executive Officer Kapila Chandrasena, who faced bribery allegations linked to the purchase of Airbus aircraft for the national carrier, was found dead at his residence in Colombo early Friday, police said.
The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption had earlier arrested Chandrasena over allegations that he accepted a 2-million-U.S.-dollar bribe in connection with the SriLankan Airlines Airbus procurement deal.
Chandrasena had previously given a statement on how the alleged bribe money was distributed among prominent political figures, including former Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa. A court later remanded him before releasing him on bail.
The Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court on Thursday issued a fresh arrest warrant for Chandrasena after the Bribery Commission informed the court that two individuals presented as sureties for his bail were allegedly hired.
The commission told the court that the arrangement breached bail conditions and violated the court's trust. After considering the submissions, the court ordered Chandrasena's re-arrest. ■
