JAKARTA, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia's economy grew 5.61 percent year on year in the first quarter of 2026, driven by broad-based expansion across sectors and a surge in government spending, Statistics Indonesia (BPS) said Tuesday.

Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, head of BPS, told a press conference that the figure was higher than the 5.39 percent recorded in the fourth quarter of 2025 and 4.87 percent in the same period last year.

Nearly all sectors posted positive growth, except mining, as well as electricity and gas. Manufacturing, which has a dominant share in the economy, expanded by 5.04 percent.

The accommodation and food services sector recorded the fastest growth at 13.14 percent, followed by transportation and warehousing at 8.04 percent.

Government consumption grew 21.81 percent, driven by religious holiday allowance payments and spending on goods and services, including the free nutritious meals program, while household consumption rose 5.52 percent.
