JAKARTA, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia has strongly condemned an Israeli attack that led to the death of an Indonesian peacekeeper serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Friday.
The soldier sustained critical injuries from Israeli tank fire on March 29. Despite receiving intensive medical care following the incident, the soldier passed away, the ministry said in a statement.
Attacks against UN peacekeeping personnel constitute a serious violation of international law and may be classified as war crimes, the ministry said, adding that coordination with UNIFIL is currently underway to ensure the swift and dignified repatriation of the soldier's remains.
The Indonesian government further urged the UN to conduct a thorough, transparent, and accountable investigation into the incident, while working with the UN and other troop-contributing nations to bolster the safety and security of peacekeepers on the ground. ■
