KABUL, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Unknown armed assailants shot dead Wahidullah Asghari, head of Afghanistan's National Snooker and Billiards Federation, in the capital Kabul, the country's General Directorate of Physical Education and Sport announced on Friday.
Asghari was abducted on Tuesday near his home in the Qala-e-Fathullah area of Police District 4, according to local reports. His body was returned to his home by forensic medicine department on Thursday.
In a statement, the sports directorate expressed "profound sorrow" over his demise and praised his "valuable services in the highest regard." The directorate assured that relevant authorities would conduct a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances of the killing and bring those responsible to justice.
The motive behind the targeted killing remains unclear. ■
