KABUL, April 14 (Xinhua) -- A child was killed as a mine left over from the past wars went off in eastern Afghanistan's Kapisa province on Monday, provincial police spokesman Abdul Fatah Faiz said Tuesday.
The deadly incident took place in Tagab district on Monday afternoon after the child found a toy-like object and began playing with. The device exploded, killing the child at the scene, the official added.
Earlier, a similar incident injured a child in Haska Mina district of Nangarhar province on Sunday.
The post-war Afghanistan reportedly is among the top mine-contaminated countries in the world as the blasts of unexploded ordnances continue to pose a serious threat to civilians, killing or injuring dozens of people, mostly children. ■
