COLOMBO, April 13 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka has deployed more than 8,000 police officers across the island for traffic duties during the New Year season and launched a special operation to arrest drunk drivers, a senior police officer said on Monday.
Deputy Inspector General of Police W.P.J. Senadheera, in charge of Traffic Control and Road Safety, said 2,500 police officers have been deployed in the Western Province alone, the country's most populous area.
He added that road accidents tend to increase during festive periods. ■
