BAKU, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Azerbaijan reopened its embassy in Tehran on Sunday, the Foreign Ministry said.

The mission will initially operate with a limited number of diplomatic and administrative staff, including the ambassador, with activities to be expanded in phases in line with security and organizational considerations.

Baku said the swift reopening underscores the special importance Azerbaijan attaches to its relations with neighboring Iran. "Our country once again reaffirms its support for initiatives aimed at ensuring lasting peace and stability in the region," the ministry said.

Baku withdrew its diplomatic personnel from Tehran and from the country's consulate in the northwestern Iranian city of Tabriz on March 6, a day after a drone attack launched from Iranian territory toward Azerbaijan's Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov cited safety concerns amid escalating tensions for the evacuation.
