NEW DELHI, April 3 (Xinhua) -- At least three people were trampled to death in two separate incidents by a herd of wild elephants on Friday in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand, officials said.

The attacks took place in the Gola block of Ramgarh district, about 56 km northeast of Ranchi, the capital city of Jharkhand.

Police officials have sent the bodies for post-mortem, and forest department teams have intensified patrolling in the area to prevent the recurrence of the attacks.

Last month, authorities in the state cleared the introduction of AI-enabled thermal cameras in some forests to curb the growing incidents of human-elephant conflict.

Over 30 people were killed due to elephant attacks in several districts of Jharkhand in the past few months.

Wildlife experts say mass urbanization, deforestation, encroachment into forestland, and the vanishing of forest buffer zones are among the reasons that push wild animals into residential areas.
