ISLAMABAD, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Nine workers were killed and three others injured after a marble mine collapsed in Pakistan's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Tuesday, officials said.
The incident occurred in the Rustam area of Mardan district, where workers were trapped under debris when the mine caved in, a spokesperson for Rescue 1122 said.
Rescue teams recovered 12 workers from the site. Nine were dead, while the injured were shifted to a nearby hospital.
Shafi Jan, special assistant to the chief minister of the province, expressed condolences and said rescue efforts were ongoing under district authorities.
Chief Minister Sohail Afridi ordered immediate medical care for the injured and directed an investigation into the incident. ■
