KABUL, March 30 (Xinhua) -- Police in the drive against outlawed objects have discovered 18 kg of opium poppy and hashish in northern Afghanistan's Badakhshan province, provincial police spokesman Ehsanullah Kamgar said Monday.
The alleged smuggler, according to the official, was attempting to take the contraband, which included 14 kg of opium poppy and 4 kg of hashish, out of the province but was identified and arrested by the police in the Kasham district on Sunday.
Kamgar also added that the drug smuggler is an Afghan national and was attempting to take the narcotics from Badakhshan to the southern Helmand province.
Police will not allow anyone to produce or traffic illegal drugs in the province, the official further said.
In similar operations, police discovered 35 kg of narcotics and arrested two smugglers in the western Nimroz province last week. ■
