COLOMBO, March 30 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka may have to restrict water supply for several hours a day over the next two to three weeks due to prevailing dry and drought conditions, a senior National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) official said on Monday.

Chairman of the NWSDB Chandana Bandara said while they have not yet imposed water cuts, current dry weather conditions could make it difficult to maintain a continuous 24-hour water supply in the future.

He said water supply to high-elevation areas has already dropped to low-pressure levels and urged the public to use available water reserves sparingly.

Bandara added that water bowsers are being deployed to areas experiencing low water pressure.

A few days ago, the Department of Meteorology warned that the prevailing dry weather conditions are expected to continue until May.
