5.13 mln people in Cambodia in debt as of 2025: report

PHNOM PENH, March 25 (Xinhua) -- About 5.13 million people in Cambodia had utilized a total loan of 62.13 billion U.S. dollars from formal lenders by the end of 2025, said the Credit Bureau Cambodia (CBC)'s annual report released on Wednesday.

The figures showed that the number of borrowers rose by 1.78 percent from 5.04 million at the end of 2024, as the amount of total debt increased by 5.3 percent from 59 billion dollars.

Phnom Penh, the capital city, along with Kandal and Kampong Speu provinces, accounted for 61 percent of the total credit balance.

"Phnom Penh had the largest credit volume of 31.66 billion dollars, equivalent to 51 percent of the national credit balance, with a total of 723,000 borrowers," the report said.

The ratio of loans overdue by more than 90 days stood at 6.46 percent at the end of 2025, it added.

According to the report, these figures were sourced from the 196 banks and financial institutions, which are members of the CBC.
