TOKYO, March 9 (Xinhua) -- Japan on Monday asked Iran for the early release of two Japanese nationals detained in the Middle Eastern country, according to the foreign ministry.
Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi made the request during a phone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi, the ministry said in a press release.
In response, Araghchi stated that Iran would continue to cooperate to ensure the safety of Japanese nationals.
Motegi also expressed concern over the continuing exchange of attacks and the deterioration of the regional situation, and called for an early de-escalation. ■
