JAKARTA, March 6 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia will begin enforcing new online safety rules for users under 16 on social media platforms, Minister of Communications and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid said on Friday.
Under the regulation, users under 16 will face restrictions on access to a number of social media platforms, with implementation to begin in stages starting March 28.
The government will "postpone access" to social media for users under 16, according to the minister, adding that the phased implementation will continue until all platforms meet their compliance obligations.
According to the minister, accounts of users under 16 on digital platforms considered "high risk" will be gradually deactivated, with TikTok, Facebook and Instagram among the affected platforms.
The government said the regulation aims to address harmful content, contact with strangers, online exploitation, fraud, cyberbullying and excessive internet use, to safeguard the well-being of young internet users. ■
