PHNOM PENH, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia said on Thursday that mine action should never be politicized as it is about saving lives, reducing humanitarian risks, and advancing peace.

In a statement, the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority said any reporting regarding the discovery of anti-personnel mines along the Cambodia-Thailand border deserved careful, objective, and responsible handling.

"Cambodia remains fully committed to its obligations under the Ottawa Convention," the statement said. "We have not laid new anti-personnel mines. Our position on this matter has been consistent, transparent, and unequivocal."

The statement said the border areas between Cambodia and Thailand remained historically contaminated as a result of decades of past conflict.

Legacy mines and explosive remnants of war continue to be discovered on both sides, the statement said, adding that this unfortunate reality underscores the importance of sustained clearance efforts and constructive bilateral cooperation.

The statement said Cambodia stands ready to cooperate constructively and transparently to clarify any situation, with the safety of civilians and border communities as the highest priority.

"Cambodia remains committed to dialogue, cooperation, and continued joint efforts toward a safe, stable, and clearly demarcated border," said the statement.
