SYDNEY, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- A man has died and a woman has been hospitalized following a unit fire in western Sydney, Australia, on Wednesday night.

A police statement said that emergency services were called to reports of the fire in the suburb of St Marys, 42 km west of central Sydney, around 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday and arrived at the scene to find the residence on the third story of a unit complex well alight.

A woman believed to be in her 40s was hospitalized in serious but stable condition after jumping from the bathroom window of the unit to escape the fire, police said.

The fire was extinguished, and the body of a man, also believed to be in his 40s, was located inside the residence.

Kevin Smith from the fire and rescue service in the state of New South Wales told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that firefighters rescued two other men from the complex and that 25 people were evacuated from the building.

Police established a crime scene and have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire.
