VIENTIANE, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Lao government convened a meeting to discuss strategic planning, institutional reforms, and pressing national issues requiring coordinated action.
The meeting, held on Tuesday in the Lao capital Vientiane, was chaired by Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone and brought together deputy prime ministers, cabinet members, and senior officials from ministries and state agencies to review progress and set priorities for the coming months, Lao National TV reported on Wednesday.
The session followed the recent election of members of the Lao National Assembly's 10th legislature and the fifth Provincial People's Councils, marking a key step in shaping policy for the new legislative and administrative term.
A central agenda item was the Prime Minister's draft statement on the 10th Five-Year National Socio-Economic Development Plan (2026-2030), which will guide the country's development over the next five years.
The meeting also reviewed the 10-year National Socio-Economic Development Strategy (2026-2035) and Vision 2055, reaffirming long-term commitments to sustainable growth, resilience, and economic self-reliance.
Participants reviewed the 2025 performance of the tourism sector and discussed policies to further stimulate growth. The meeting also examined the implementation of the resolution promoting electric vehicle use, proposing additional measures to accelerate the transition to cleaner, more sustainable transport.
Legal and regulatory reforms were highlighted, including draft decrees on the transport of dangerous goods and the regulation of international non-governmental organizations, aimed at enhancing regulatory clarity, public safety, and governance.
In his speech, Sonexay noted the complex regional and global environment, marked by geopolitical tensions, economic disputes, and uncertainties. He stressed the need for close monitoring, timely responses, and coordinated action to safeguard livelihoods and national development.
The meeting reinforced the government's commitment to policy coherence, structural reforms, and sustained socio-economic progress amid a challenging external landscape. ■
