KABUL, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan's Ministry of Public Health reported that more than 2 million people sought mental health support at medical facilities nationwide during the past year, according to local media outlet Tolo news on Friday.
The ministry stated that individuals experiencing anxiety disorders and severe mental health conditions received treatment at health facilities nationwide, and the report highlighted a notable expansion of services during the reporting period, with the number of centers offering mental health support rising from 230 to 430 across the country.
Health authorities estimate that nearly half of the population is affected by anxiety-related issues, emphasizing the growing demand for accessible psychological and emotional care, the report added.
At present, over 200 specialists are engaged in mental health treatment, supported by approximately 1,100 counselors providing psychological services throughout Afghanistan. Among them are around 300 female counselors who play an active role in delivering care to patients. ■
