COLOMBO, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka Police on Thursday warned that foreign nationals who drive without a valid license in the country will face prosecution, as traffic accidents involving foreign drivers rise.

Police Media Spokesperson Assistant Superintendent of Police F.U. Wootler said five foreign nationals died in road accidents in 2025 while driving in Sri Lanka. He said police also recorded seven serious accidents, 78 minor injury incidents and six vehicle damage cases involving foreign drivers during the year.

Wootler stressed that foreigners must present an International Driving Permit valid for the vehicle class, a Sri Lankan driving permit issued to foreign residents by the Department of Motor Traffic, or a conversion certificate for the relevant vehicle class issued after submitting a foreign license to the department.

The spokesperson urged vehicle rental and hire services to verify that foreign customers hold one of the recognized permits before providing rental services.

Police also said no organization other than the department is authorized to issue driving licenses or temporary permits to foreign nationals, and urged tourists to follow the directives to ensure their safety during their visit.
