TOKYO, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks ended lower on Monday, weighed down by selling after the release of weaker-than-expected Japanese gross domestic product data.

The benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, ended down 135.56 points, or 0.24 percent, from Friday at 56,806.41.

The broader Topix index, meanwhile, finished 31.47 points, or 0.82 percent, lower at 3,787.38.

Stocks opened higher but later slipped into negative territory after the Cabinet Office announced that Japan's economy grew by an annualized real 0.2 percent for the quarter ending December 2025, far smaller than market expectations of an expansion of 1.48 percent.

The market was also pressured by selling to lock in gains following the recent rally, with auto and banking issues notably falling, analysts said.
