COLOMBO, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka has rolled out a digital civil registration system across 62 overseas missions, allowing expatriates to obtain birth, marriage and death certificates electronically, with over 8,000 documents issued in its first year as part of the country's public sector modernization drive, the President's Media Division (PMD) said on Saturday.
The initiative, implemented through the Registrar General's Department, enables Sri Lankans living abroad to request certified civil documents directly through embassies and high commissions without traveling back to Sri Lanka, PMD said.
PMD said the Electronic Birth, Marriage and Death (e-BMD) system was introduced after a successful pilot phase and is now operating across diplomatic missions worldwide.
Authorities noted that the digital platform has helped reduce processing times and improve access to public services for the diaspora, particularly for employment, education and legal purposes.
The government said the project is part of wider efforts to modernize public administration and improve efficiency and transparency through digitalization. ■
