BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- The commissioning of Brunei's largest solar initiative took place at Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd at Pulau Muara Besar (PMB) on Thursday.
The Sustainable Integration of Natural and Renewable Energy (SINAR) project represents a significant step forward in integrating renewable energy into the company's petrochemical refinery operations, while supporting Brunei's national renewable energy goals.
Following the commissioning of stage 1 of the project, it is expected to generate up to 84,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of clean electricity annually, supplying 7 percent of the facility's total energy requirements.
Brunei's Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister of Finance and Economy Haji Mohd Amin Liew Abdullah said Hengyi Industries' sustainability journey does not end with SINAR. Supported by the Brunei government and China's Zhejiang Hengyi Group, the company will be embarking on a significant expansion in the coming months.
The minister said that, scheduled for completion by early 2029, the expansion will nearly triple the refinery's production capacity, increasing output from 8 million to 20 million metric tons per year, further strengthening Brunei's downstream industry and economic resilience.
Chief Executive Officer of Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd Chen Lian Cai emphasized the project's role in reducing carbon emissions and advancing more energy-efficient and environmentally responsible industrial practices. ■
