JAKARTA, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- The Indonesian government on Tuesday introduced a nationwide transportation fare discount program to boost public mobility and support economic growth during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr holiday season.
Speaking at a press conference at Gambir Station in Jakarta, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said previous major holidays had contributed to increased mobility and tourism activities, which helped support economic growth.
The government has allocated 911.16 billion rupiah (about 54.2 million U.S. dollars) to fund the program, which includes a 30 percent discount on train and sea transport tickets, a full waiver of port service fees, and discounts of up to 18 percent on domestic economy-class airfares.
It will also implement a five-day flexible working arrangement in March and provide 11.92 trillion rupiah (about 709 million dollars) in food assistance to help strengthen purchasing power.
Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim-majority country, typically sees large-scale homecoming travel during Eid al-Fitr, as millions travel to their hometowns to celebrate the holiday with their families. ■
