COLOMBO, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's University Grants Commission (UGC) said on Tuesday that it will expand access to higher education by enabling students with disabilities to enroll in all state universities, as part of efforts to make campuses more inclusive.
UGC Chairman Kapila Seneviratne told journalists in Colombo that universities will be equipped with facilities and support systems to accommodate students with special needs.
Currently, only a limited number of universities admit such students, he said.
The commission plans to widen opportunities by opening more academic streams, including Information Technology and Music.
The UGC is also upgrading student housing nationwide, with 1.5 billion rupees (about 5 million U.S. dollars) allocated to improve residential infrastructure and enhance living conditions for students, he said. ■
