ULAN BATOR, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- A total of 7,330 foreigners from various countries and regions were granted Mongolian electronic visas in January of 2026, marking a 42.4-percent increase compared to the same period in 2025, according to the country's immigration agency on Monday.

During the same period, the country's immigration agency issued 1,237 residence permits in Mongolia and extended 5,057 residence permits. The residence permit issuance increased by 1.6 percent compared to the corresponding period last year.

At present, Mongolia's economy depends heavily on the mining sector and on the export of mineral resources. Therefore, sustainable tourism development is considered one of the priorities for diversifying the country's economy and increasing the competitiveness of its tourism in the context of global competition.

Reaffirming its commitment to maintaining an open and tourism-friendly policy, the Mongolian authorities have decided to continue the "Years to Visit Mongolia" tourism program until 2028 to promote its tourism.

According to the Mongolian Tourism Organization, the landlocked Asian country recorded nearly 850,000 inbound tourist visits by foreign passport holders in 2025.
