VIENTIANE, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- As the Chinese New Year approaches, a colorful festive spirit is filling Laos. Red decorations are being displayed, festive activities are underway, and excitement is building among the people as they prepare to celebrate the holiday.

"During the festival, the streets would feel alive, with dragon dances, music, and bright colors everywhere. It's fun and full of color," Pook, a resident of Lao capital Vientiane, told Xinhua.

She added that the festival offers a variety of activities to join, and she is looking forward to trying new experiences this year.

Meanwhile, Mie, a 20-year-old student in Vientiane, highlighted the joy and lively atmosphere of the festival. "I remember when I took extra Chinese language classes to improve my skills. Our teachers would organize fun activities to celebrate the festival, where we could sing Chinese songs and learn more about the culture," she said.

"Even though I'm not Chinese, the festival makes everyone feel part of the festive spirit. It always lifts our energy and warms our hearts, because we can gather to share meals, meet elders, and play with the younger ones," she added.

The 2026 Chinese New Year's vibrant celebrations bring the Chinese and Lao communities together. The festivities began on Feb. 4 with the "Singing and Dancing Along the Way, Sharing Affection" event aboard the China-Laos Railway, turning trains into "mobile stages" with performances, folk activities, and storytelling that connected participants across borders.

From Feb. 7 to 8, the Chinese Cultural Center in Laos hosted additional events featuring traditional music, dance, crafts, heritage exhibits, and food tasting. Officials said the celebrations allow Lao people to experience Chinese culture firsthand while strengthening the friendship between the two nations.

The events highlighted the enduring cultural ties and close bond between China and Laos.

On the other hand, vendors and business owners welcome the festival as a sign of renewed energy in the markets.

Along the streets of Vientiane at night, the glow of red lanterns and the vibrant red and gold of traditional Chinese Qipao dresses stand out against the cityscape. Lina, a Lao vendor, noted that besides decorations like lanterns, Qipao remains extremely popular among locals. She explained that Lao customers are eager to buy the elegant dress, which has become a symbol of the festival in Laos.

"Every year, Qipao is always popular. People like it because it is beautiful, colorful, and brings a special feeling to the festival. Even those who are not Chinese enjoy wearing it for photos, family gatherings, and celebrations," Lina said.

She added that younger people are now more creative with their outfits, mixing traditional Qipao with modern accessories. "It shows that the festival is evolving and that cultural exchange can be joyful," she added.
