HONG KONG, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong police said on Thursday that a male suspect involved in a murder case 37 years ago in the city's Sai Kung District had been escorted back from Thailand.
Police said the case took place in 1989 and involved four men, one of whom had remained at large for years. With no legal departure record, police inferred that the suspect had left Hong Kong illegally. The long period of absconding and significant changes in his appearance made the investigation difficult.
Chow Yat-ming, commissioner of police of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government, said that Hong Kong police had been pursuing leads and recently obtained intelligence that the suspect was hiding in Thailand. They then proactively contacted Thai authorities and provided relevant information.
The suspect was subsequently arrested in Thailand, where he had no legal identity or residence documents. Fingerprint comparison confirmed his involvement in the case, and he admitted his role, Chow said.
Chow thanked the Thai police for their support, adding that Hong Kong and Thailand will further strengthen collaboration in smart policing. ■
