KUALA LUMPUR, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's national carmaker Proton is targeting to sell 200,000 units of cars in 2026 after its January car sales hit a 15-year high.

The firm said in a statement that, following a successful conclusion to 2025 that resulted in overall sales outpacing total industry volume growth by over six times, the firm has carried forward the momentum and kicked off the new year with an impressive performance in January.

The group achieved sales of 19,833 units in January, a 35.3 percent improvement over December 2025 and a 100 percent year-on-year increase over the 9,918 units sold in January last year.

Based on early calculations, the firm noted Proton's current market share is estimated to be 30.6 percent, another high point since January 2012 and pointing towards a good start for the company's ambition to sell 200,000 units in 2026.

The firm's total group sales for 2025 closed at 157,976 units. This represents an overall growth of 3.3 percent over 2024.
