Road accidents kill over 900 in Laos in 2025

VIENTIANE, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- Although slightly lower than the previous year, traffic accidents in Laos remained deadly in 2025, with 6,779 incidents causing 10,464 injuries and 917 deaths nationwide.

These road accidents resulted in 12,158 vehicles being damaged. Compared to 2024, the number of accidents slightly decreased from 6,789, while injuries and fatalities also fell from 10,312 and 929, respectively.

Lao capital Vientiane reported the highest number of accidents with 1,273 incidents and 208 deaths, followed by Champasak province with 945 accidents and 125 deaths, and Vientiane province with 761 accidents and 70 deaths, the local Pasaxon newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The main causes of accidents include drunk driving, speeding, failure to yield, unsecured vehicles and unsafe lane changes.

The government is actively working to prevent and reduce road accidents through investments in road safety infrastructure and collaboration with both domestic and international partners to enhance public safety.
