KABUL, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan continues to be among the countries most affected by explosive remnants of war, ranking third worldwide in casualties caused by landmines and other unexploded ordnance, according to the United Nations, as reported by local media Tolo news on Tuesday.
The UN report emphasized that children are the most at-risk group, accounting for approximately 80 percent of casualties. Many of these injuries and fatalities occur when children come into contact with unexploded devices while playing.
Despite ongoing clearance operations, landmines and other explosive remnants remain widespread, posing a persistent threat across the country, the report said.
The UN also highlighted its financial support for non-governmental organizations involved in mine clearance, underlining the urgent need for sustained international assistance to prevent further loss of life. ■
