SYDNEY, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Researchers in Australia have discovered a new stress reduction role for a naturally occurring molecule in the body that could lead to new drugs and treatment for metabolic disorders and ageing.
The team of University of Queensland (UQ) researchers found very small RNA molecules, called microRNAs, bind to genes and prevent them from being over-activated, said a UQ statement on Thursday.
The study focused on a specific microRNA, called amiR-71, using Caenorhabditis elegans worms, where microRNAs were discovered about 30 years ago and later linked to human health and disease, the researchers said. ■
