TOKYO, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks ended lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Nikkei index falling for a fifth consecutive trading day, weighed down by concern about escalating trade tensions between the United States and Europe over Greenland.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 216.46 points, or 0.41 percent, from Tuesday at 52,774.64, marking its first five-day losing streak since January 2025.
The broader Topix index, meanwhile, finished 35.90 points, or 0.99 percent, lower at 3,589.70.
On the stock market, the Nikkei index lost nearly 800 points at one point following sharp declines in U.S. markets overnight amid concern about the risk to the global economy from U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to impose new tariffs on eight European countries in an effort to advance his ambition to "take over" Greenland. ■
