KABUL, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan's Hairatan land port has facilitated more than 2.2 million tons of commercial goods exports and imports with Central Asian countries over the past 10 months, according to a report by the official Bakhtar News Agency on Tuesday.
The port, which serves as a vital bridge between Central Asia and South Asia, imported 2.15 million tons of goods while exporting 138,000 tons during the same period, the state-run agency quoted Besmullah Mazari, chairman of the Astras Hairatan Port Company, as saying.
The official noted a significant surge in trade volume over the last three months, following the suspension of commerce between Afghanistan and Pakistan due to border tensions.
More than 1 million tons of goods have been exported and imported through Hairatan in this timeframe, highlighting a notable shift in regional trade flows and the port's rising role as an alternative corridor.
As Afghanistan's busiest dry port and primary gateway to Central Asia, China, and Europe, Hairatan port in northern Balkh province operates around the clock to support the landlocked nation's economic connectivity. ■
