DHAKA, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh experienced a significant surge in crime in 2025, marked by a notable rise in offences such as theft, robbery and abduction.
According to the recently published official statistics of the Bangladesh Police, theft cases rose by 12 percent to 9,672, while abduction cases saw a sharper increase of 71 percent, reaching 1,101.
In 2025, police reported 1,935 snatching cases, a 37 percent year-on-year increase, and 702 robbery cases, a 43 percent rise.
These four kinds of crimes totalled 13,410 cases in 2025, a 16.48 percent increase from 2024.
Apart from these, there were 3,786 murder cases recorded last year, 354 more than the figure in 2024.
Overall, the total number of criminal cases filed with the Bangladesh Police in 2025 rose by 9,732, reaching 181,737. ■
