ISLAMABAD, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan recorded a current account deficit of 244 million U.S. dollars in December 2025, reversing a surplus posted in the previous month, data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) showed on Monday.

According to the central bank, the deficit followed a surplus of 98 million dollars, which was earlier reported to be at 100 million dollars, in November 2025 and a surplus of 454 million dollars in December 2024.

In December 2025, Pakistan's total exports of goods and services rose to 3.69 billion dollars, up nearly 20 percent from 3.09 billion dollars recorded in November.

Meanwhile, total imports stood at 7.04 billion dollars during the month, compared with 5.69 billion dollars in November, reflecting a sharp increase in import payments, the data showed.

Workers' remittances continued to provide support to the external account. Remittance inflows totaled 3.6 billion dollars in December, up from 3.2 billion dollars recorded in November, according to the SBP.

For the first half of the current fiscal year (July-December FY2026), Pakistan's current account posted a cumulative deficit of 1.174 billion dollars, compared with a surplus of 957 million dollars in the same period last year, the central bank said.
