NEW DELHI, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Indian government on Tuesday directed the e-commerce companies engaged in delivering groceries and food items to give up the practice of promising delivery to consumers within 10 minutes of placing their online orders.
The move follows widespread protests by gig workers across the country, who argued that such aggressive delivery timelines jeopardize their safety.
Many e-commerce and delivery firms, involved in delivering groceries and food items to end-users, tend to attract consumers by promising a quick delivery.
In recent years, road accident cases involving gig workers trying to meet quick delivery deadlines have hit the headlines, thus triggering concerns in society about their safety and well-being. ■
