ULAN BATOR, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Mongolia's measles tally surged to 13,861 after 8 new local infections were reported in the past 24 hours, the country's National Center for Communicable Diseases (NCCD) said on Thursday.

More than half of new measles infections were among school-age children who have had only one shot of the measles vaccine, the NCCD said in a statement.

In this regard, the NCCD suggested that parents protect their children from a potentially severe disease by getting them two doses of the measles vaccine.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease transmitted by respiratory droplets and direct contact.

Common complications include fever, dry cough, runny nose, sore throat, and inflamed eyes. The disease can be prevented by immunization.
