BANGKOK, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- A total of 272 people died and 1,464 others were injured from 1,511 road accidents across Thailand during the week-long New Year travel period, official reports showed on Tuesday.
According to the Ministry of Interior, the "Seven Dangerous Days" road safety campaign, which ran from Dec. 30 to Jan. 5, saw a decrease in the number of traffic accidents, injuries, and deaths compared to the previous year.
Deputy Interior Permanent Secretary Chaiwat Chuenkosum said the statistics reflect a positive trend with a decline in casualties. However, he noted that speeding remained the leading cause of fatal accidents, followed by drunk driving and sudden lane changes.
The capital of Bangkok recorded the highest number of fatalities with 22 deaths, while the southern resort island of Phuket registered the highest cumulative number of accidents and injuries at 55 and 58, respectively, Chaiwat told a press briefing. ■
