VIENTIANE, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- As the clock edged closer to midnight on Dec. 31, houses and streets in Laos came alive with laughter, music and the bright flicker of fireworks, as people gathered together to welcome the first day of 2026.
A group of friends who study together at the National University of Laos celebrated New Year's Eve at the Patuxay monument in the Lao capital Vientiane.
Singing along to their favorite songs and cheering with the crowd, they described the evening as a joyful moment of friendship and shared happiness, welcoming the new year as one big family.
"We make it a point to celebrate together here. There's something magical about counting down with friends, surrounded by so many people all cheering at the same time," said Nickie, one of the friends in the group.
Meanwhile, many Lao families celebrated New Year's Eve with fun activities, gift exchanges and giving money to younger relatives.
"My family always makes time for small games and activities during this time. We exchange gifts and give a little money to the younger ones, which creates happy memories and makes the evening feel warm and lively," Pookie, a resident of Savannakhet province, told Xinhua.
"We cook together, share stories and laugh a lot. It feels like starting the year with fresh energy and love," she added.
Pookie said that even simple moments, like handing over a wrapped gift, held special meaning. "It's fun, it's joyful, and spending time together makes the new year bright."
Despite the chilly weather, some people celebrated the New Year warmly. Max, a resident of Vientiane, gathered outdoors at a friend's house, sharing food and stories.
"The weather is colder than usual, but being here with my friends makes the night feel so warm. Sitting in a circle, sipping drinks, sharing our life experiences and counting down to 2026 as one big group fills my heart with warmth," said Max.
Meanwhile, others spent quiet, meaningful moments at home with family, enjoying meals, movies and togetherness, emphasizing that simple moments can make the celebration meaningful.
Thong, a father of two in Vientiane, decided to spend the evening at home with his family. "We kept it simple but fulfilling. We had dinner together, watched movies, and shared little moments. Enjoying each other's company is enough to make the New Year feel special," he said. ■
