VIENTIANE, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Lao National Internet Committee convened a meeting to review its 2025 performance and set key priorities for 2026, with a focus on strengthening internet governance, enhancing cybersecurity, and combating online fraud.
The meeting was held on Thursday in the Lao capital Vientiane, and was chaired by Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Security Vilay Lakhamfong, with representatives from relevant agencies in attendance, according to Lao National Radio.
The meeting reviewed a summary of 2025 activities and outlined the 2026 work plan, highlighting progress in internet management, digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, and the use of information and communication technology across government operations, business, and daily life. The committee also noted ongoing challenges, particularly the misuse of the internet and social media, and called for stronger measures to address them.
The meeting also marked the official launch of the Anti-Online Fraud Center, which is scheduled to begin operations on Dec. 29.
In his speech, Vilay emphasized strengthening the committee's role, enhancing coordination across ministries and provincial authorities, and reviewing existing legislation to meet current needs. He called for amendments to laws on computer crime and online information management, and the development of national strategies for telecommunications, cybersecurity, digital infrastructure, and others. ■
